About

About OpenCase

Files drop. Case opens. You’re the investigator now.

OpenCase is an independent news site built on publicly released records: court filings, government releases, declassified files and public archives.

It has two parts. OpenCase News reports on the releases themselves: what was released, when, and by whom. The investigations put the records in your hands. You step inside the case, open the boxes, read the documents, emails, photographs and flight logs, pin the evidence to a board of your own and connect what you find.

How we report

  • We report what the records say and what the people who released them say about them.
  • We name the agency, court or official behind each release, and we link to the records themselves wherever we can.
  • An allegation is reported as an allegation, with the response of the person accused when there is one.
  • Appearing in a record does not mean a person did anything wrong.
  • We do not name or show victims and survivors. In the investigations they appear as a Redacted Entity, with a silhouette in place of a photograph.
  • When we get something wrong, we correct it and say so in the article.

Independence

OpenCase is independent. It is not affiliated with any court, government agency, law enforcement body, or the archives it draws from.
